From the August 19th TV Guide:

YOU GLOW GIRL! FACE IT: THE GEORGE HAMILTONIAN TAN IS BACK
Attention, Winona Ryder! After years of enduring the pale look, the skin-be-damned tan of the '70s has returned. "It's coming from the fashion magazines," says celebrity makeup artist Shane Paish. "Everyone looks better with a tan. I don't care what anybody says." Apparently these women don't either. But some are saving their skin by slathering on self-tanners. Here's how they shine head to head. —Sharon Goldman Edry

KATIE HOLMES
Pre-tan: Snow White
Post-tan: Sunkist orange
Sun or bottle: No word from Holmes's camp
Our expert says: It's likely a natural base, plus body makeup, says makeup artist Brett Freedman.
We think: Katie's whiter shade of pale is better.

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR
Pre-tan: Buff but blah
Post-tan: Golden slayer
Sun or bottle: Won't divulge her cruel intentions
Our expert says: "She doesn't look like she's out all night fighting vampires," says Freedman.
We think: We know what she did this summer.

HEATHER LOCKLEAR
Pre-tan: She always looks tan.
Post-tan: Like Locklear should
Sun or bottle: It's sunblock and self-tanner, she claims.
Our expert says: "She's so blond, she'd look hideously washed out if she wasn't tan," says Paish.
We think: Who are we to mess with the Locklear legend?

I prefer the pale look. And Heather wasn't tan on The Place and didn't look washed out.
