From the May 25th Soap Opera Digest:
We'll Never Forget |
Oh, those wacky Angelenos. Over its seven years, MELROSE PLACE has run the gamut from high camp to solid drama to just plain out of control - it was everything but predictable. Here are 10 of our favorite moments.
Remember the expressions on Billy and Alison's faces when Amanda announced that she had bought the apartment complex? Suddenly, the perennially perky pair had to deal with the bossy blonde round-the-clock. But as Amanda recently pointed out, while she had hoped to weasel her way into everyone's lives, they managed to weasel into hers, as well.
After slipping into a coma following her car accident with Michael, Kimberly was shipped home to Cincinnati. Michael was later told that she died. But late one night, while Michael was romancing Sydney in his Malibu home, the camera panned out to the beach where Kimberly - alive and sort-of well - stood lurking.
It was supposed to be Alison and Billy's happiest day, getting married in the courtyard of the complex, But when Alison's father whispered for her not to cry, it triggered a memory of being molested by Daddy-O when she was a little girl. Alison ran out on her wedding - and out the window - in search of the truth. She found it, courtesy of her sister.
In what was surely prime-time's most memorable catfight since DYNASTY's Alexis and Krystle took a dive into the fountain, Jane and Sydney made a splash when Jane found Sydney wearing the family's treasured wedding gown. After they tumbled into the pool, other cast members took unplanned dips on a regular basis.
It was shocking when Kimberly locked herself in Michael's bathroom and removed her wig, revealing to the audience the hideous scar from the car accident on the side of her head. But nothing beat the moment when, during a fight at the hospital, an irate Matt tore off the hairpiece, much to Kimberly's horror.
This is what happens when you listen to those nasty little voices in your head. Traumatized by her accident and haunted by images of a man who raped her mother, a demented Kimberly lured her victims to the apartment complex. "It's not what it looks like," she deadpanned before turning the place into a Fourth of July extravaganza. "It's much worse."
Ty Miller, Billy's best friend and college roommate, came to town for Billy's wedding to Alison. Much to Matt's surprise, Ty was gay. He hadn't come out of the closet to Billy, though, when his shocked pal spied Matt and Ty in a slow-motion, pool-side embrace. Following in the footsteps of most of Malt's boy-toys, Ty was out the door by the end of the episode.
Unbalanced Brooke had lied and cheated everyone she knew. She manipulated Billy into marrying her and pretended she was pregnant to keep him. After her father died, leaving his bride, Alison, a widow, Brooke spent every free minute making Alison's life miserable. When Billy fell into Alison's arms, a drunken Brooke fell into the pool, smacked her head on the side and drowned. Buh-hye.
Psychotic Richard Hart had been making Jane's life hell after they stopped sleeping together. She enlisted her sister's help in finishing off Richard once and for all. After bashing the creep on the head with a shovel, they thought he was dead and took him out to the desert to bury him. Too bad he was still alive, as stunned audiences saw when Richard's hand came clawing up from the grave, a la Carrie.
Sure, she did some terrible things (like steal sister Jane's husband and cause Jane's pharmaceutical induced stroke), but even Sydney didn't deserve such a horrible, ill-timed, and permanent death! Having finally found true love, Syd exchanged vows with Craig Field - only to be cut down in her wedding dress by a car driven by Samantha's crooked father. |
I would replace Brooke dying in the pool with Matt saying goodbye to his stepdaughter Nikki. It was so sad when he had to put her on the plane back to Russia. I almost cried.
