Brooke Langton & Sarah Buxton
Let's Put The Ex In Sex
In 1996, Brooke Langton was at the height of her visibility, via roles in TV's Melrose Place and the indie hit film, Swingers, while Sarah Buxton had toiled for 12 years in minor parts. The casting of these twentysomething brunettes as best friends with a lesbian past in the B-grade murder mystery, Listen, was a match made in late-night, premium-channel heaven.
Langton portrays Sarah (now, that had to be confusing!), a San Francisco accountant who moves into a new apartment building to be one floor below her new boyfriend Jake (Gordon Currie). He's a writer with a bad case of block, both in terms of putting pen to paper and putting the moves on Sarah. Her best friend and former lover, Krista (Burton), still carries a torch for Sarah and is obsessively jealous about her relationship with her new beau.
Frustrated by Jake's inability to get it on with her, Sarah picks up her cordless phone to call him, but is stopped in her tracks by the conversation she is picking up from somewhere nearby: a man and a woman having phone sex. She becomes very turned on, and finds herself returning to the phone again and again for some vicarious, masturbatory thrills.
But Sarah soon makes a connection between the sexy conversations and the serial murders of prostitutes that have been happening in the city. She enlists Krista to help find the killer's identity before the killer finds them. Luckily for us, Krista uses the opportunity to try to rekindle her flame with Sarah (this page), while also casting suspicion on Jake.
Burton has since become known as the conniving Annie Douglas-Richards on the TV soaper, Sunset Beach, while Langton won the role of Angela Bennett (originated on the big screen by Sandra Bullock) in the syndicated series, The Net.
